Let’s take a father’s perspective on child custody and parenting time in Jefferson County and Louisville Family Court. These days, fathers in Kentucky who reside with their children tend to participate more in their activities, care and with household chores. The number of fathers who are single and who remain at home to raise their children has also increased. However, a growing number of children do not live with their fathers.
According to a recent Pew Research Center study, fathers increasingly believe that parenting is an essential part of who they are. A majority of fathers, 54 percent, tend to enjoy the benefits being a parent and sharing in the lives of their children. Forty-six percent of fathers report that they always enjoy being a parent.
A father’s perspective on child custody and parenting time during and after a divorce has substantially changed, even in the past decade.
In the past, fathers were not as involved in the care of their children as they are now. Fathers stated that they spent an average of seven hours each week on child care in the recent study. This is almost three times the length of time fathers would have cared for a child in 1965. Fathers also reported that they spend nine hours per week taking care of the home in the study, which is four more hours than what was reported in 1965.
In 1965, the majority of fathers in the US were the sole provider of income to the household. Today, it is much more common for both parents to work. Just 27 percent of families with minor children have a father who is the only source of household income.
