Technology Issues to Consider in a Louisville Divorce

What are some of the Technology Issues to Consider in a Louisville Divorce

What are some of the technology issues to consider in a Louisville divorce?  Technology has become a major part of our everyday lives.  Technology extends well beyond your own computer, laptop or cell phone.  Many homes use automation to control every aspect of the home, from lights to HV/AC and appliances.  Even your TV and gaming systems have become portals which must be considered in the context of a divorce, especially if there are any concerns with stalking and/or domestic violence.

In many Kentucky divorce cases the former spouses continue to share the family home, even if it’s only for a period of time.  This is specifically important if one wishes to protect their interests in child custody or parenting time matters.  Moving out of the family home at the outset or during a divorce can impact one’s standing in custody and parenting time matters.

It is important to know what technology issues to consider in a Louisville divorce and to take precautions to protect your interests.  The first step is obvious to most: change passwords on everything from emails to social media.  If it has a password you should give serious consideration to changing it.  It is also wise to choose a new PIN number to use for security on your devices as well as on your bank accounts and credit cards.

Most technology issues to consider in a Louisville divorce may come as a surprise.  Online streaming has become a major part of our lives, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Online streaming can be tracked to provide specific insights into your daily activities.  Consider changing passwords on all streaming services, especially those such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime.

Part of the orders you may seek from the Court during a Louisville divorce prohibit a former spouse from accessing smart devices throughout your home.

Many households use some sort of “cloud” service to store everything from photos and videos to documents and for device backup.  Usually these cloud accounts are shared, which provides easy access to activities during and after a divorce you may wish to keep private.  You might consider establishing a new cloud storage account, or at least change the login and password for any existing internet storage account.

The internet in your home is usually controlled by a router.  The router has its own login and password.  If your former spouse moves out of the home you should absolutely change this as well.

One of the additional technology issues to consider in a Louisville divorce is the “location services” associated with your cell phone.  Many apps on your cell phone can be used to track you or to provide information on where you’ve been or your present location.  This is a substantial concern when issues of domestic violence or stalking exist.

Are you considering a divorce in Louisville or anywhere in Jefferson County?  There is a lot on your plate already, but it is important to give serious consideration to all aspects of technology along the way.
