Are Women More Likely to Begin the Divorce Process in Louisville?

Are women more likely to begin the divorce process in Louisville?  It may surprise you to learn that according to a recent study by Stanford University “Who wants the Breakup? Gender and Breakup in Heterosexual Couples” almost 70% of divorces are filed by a woman.  The study is based upon a survey of over 2,000 people ranging in age from 19 to 94.

It may surprise you to learn women are more likely to begin the divorce due to a loss of independence and dissatisfaction in their marriages.  Over the past few decades lifestyles have changed.  More women are working than previous generations yet many husbands expect their wife to manage most of the cooking, housework and child care.

The study found one of the things which made women more likely to begin the divorce process in Louisville was the lack of balance between the spouses regarding meal preparation, household chores, child rearing and income.

One of the sociologists cited in the study, Michael Rosenfeld, noted “For women, marriage itself is burdened by outdated expectations and hasn’t evolved to fit current expectations for gender reality.”

While the divorce rate drops as the age of the couple drops, many believe this is due to evolving perceptions as children of divorce grow up and ultimately marry.  Millennials and the generations which follow have generally waited longer to get married and have much different expectations of relationship boundaries.  The study found women today are much less likely to tolerate infidelity, abuse and an unfair distribution of responsibility in exchange for financial security.
