January Divorces Are Often Due to Holiday Stress

January Divorces Are Often Due to Holiday Stress - Louisville Family Law

Why are more divorces filed in January and February when compared with the rest of the year?  January divorces are often due to holiday stress and a deepening feeling that it simply isn’t working.  January is a time for new starts, and for many married couples in Louisville that could include ending a marriage.

When you combine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the general rancor in the news and the stress of remote or virtual learning for our children it’s been one of the toughest years for most families.

December holidays can cause problems for the happiest of couples, and they can make things even more stressful for couples who are having difficulties to begin with. While January divorces are often due to holiday stress The American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) advises people who are considering divorce to avoid emotional triggers which could cause problems in the divorce proceedings.

According to the AAML, divorce should be approached more like a business deal.  You wouldn’t even consider buying a car or conducting business while arguing and exchanging words.  Quite simply, it would make it next to impossible to negotiate a good deal.

The AAML notes hostility will ultimately make your divorce more complicated, increase the time it takes to complete the process as well as drive up the cost.

The primary source of expense in a divorce is disagreement and hostility between the parties.  Therefore, the ability to resolve areas of disagreement and reach resolution will not only relieve a lot of the emotional burden of your divorce, it will speed the process and significantly reduce the cost.

While January divorces are often due to holiday stress this year the sources of discontentment are compounded by quarantine, remote learning and developments here in the US and around the world.  Making and executing an important decision such as divorce in the midst of swirling emotions is not usually in your best interests.

You’ve probably been thinking about the divorce throughout the holidays.  The AAML suggests a divorce should begin with pre-planning and the development of strategy.  This is why it is important to contact the divorce and family law attorneys at Dodd & Dodd.  You have a lot of questions and pre-planning with our team will help to clarify the process and the steps you can take to best position yourself for success.
